Our Safety Orientation (Foodservice) training course gives new kitchen and restaurant employees a solid foundation in workplace safety before their first shift. Whether you're a cafeteria line server, a certified master chef, a dishwasher in a hospital's foodservice department, or work in any commercial kitchen setting, safety training benefits everyone who works around food preparation. Wet floors, knives, steamers, mixers, slicers, grinders, dish machines, hot surfaces, and fryers are just a few of the hazards present in a kitchen — and the risk multiplies during a lunch or dinner rush, when a single piece of lettuce on the floor becomes a serious slip hazard that's easy to miss until someone falls. This 16-minute course is designed to foster positive safety attitudes and empower employees to make good hazard management decisions from day one. Available in English and Spanish.

Who Should Take This Course?
All new hires in food service — including line cooks, servers, dishwashers, and kitchen staff. Also suitable for members of management, supervisors, train-the-trainer use, and annual refresher training.

This orientation touches on many kitchen hazards briefly — commonly paired with these dedicated courses for deeper, standards-specific training on the highest-risk areas in foodservice:

  • Food Safety & Personal Hygiene Training — this orientation touches on kitchen hazards only; this dedicated course goes in-depth on handwashing, proper cooking and chilling temperatures, and preventing foodborne illness.
  • Fire Safety Training — commercial kitchens are among the highest fire-risk workplaces. This course covers fire extinguisher use, fire classes, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subparts E and L in far more depth than this overview.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Training — covers proper PPE selection under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132-.138, including cut-resistant gloves and non-slip footwear relevant to kitchen work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this course satisfy all food safety and health code requirements?

No, and it's not meant to. This is a broad safety orientation focused on kitchen hazards like slips, burns, and cuts — not a food handler certification course. Many states and counties require separate food handler or food manager certification covering health codes and foodborne illness prevention. Our Food Safety & Personal Hygiene course goes much deeper into that side of kitchen safety.

How long is the training video?

16 minutes, making it practical to complete as part of a new hire's first shift without disrupting kitchen operations.

Is this suitable for experienced kitchen staff, or only new hires?

While designed primarily for new hire orientation, it also works well as an annual refresher for existing staff, for supervisors training the trainer, and as a baseline safety review after a change in kitchen or role.

Does this cover both front-of-house and back-of-house staff?

Yes. While many of the hazards covered — knives, slicers, hot surfaces, burns — are most relevant to kitchen staff, topics like slips/trips/falls, chemical safety, fire safety, and first aid apply to servers, hosts, and other front-of-house employees as well.

Does this subscription automatically renew?

Yes. This is a prepaid subscription that automatically renews at the end of each term at the then-current price unless canceled. You can view, manage, or cancel your subscription at any time through your account portal.

What's the difference between Streaming, MP4, USB, and DVD?

Streaming gives you instant online access from any device — no download required. MP4 is a one-time download you host on your own platform such as an LMS, file server, or SharePoint. USB and DVD are physical media shipped to you, best for classroom training where internet access is limited or unavailable.

If I purchase the USB, can I copy the video to share with others?

No. The video on the USB is encrypted and licensed to only be played from the USB. It must be inserted in your computer for it to play.

What documentation is provided for compliance recordkeeping?

The kit includes a compliance manual, employee quiz and answer key, completion certificates, wallet/ID cards, an attendance log, a training outline, and food service supplemental documents — everything needed to document that orientation training was completed.
