Forklift operator training requirements

OSHA's powered industrial truck standard, 29 CFR 1910.178(l), directs employers to train forklift operators in three parts: formal instruction, practical hands-on training, and an evaluation of the operator in the workplace. Refresher evaluation is required at least once every three years, and after an accident, near-miss, or change in equipment or workplace conditions.

The programs below deliver the formal instruction portion. The hands-on practical training and the operator evaluation are conducted by the employer at your own site, using your own equipment.

What the training covers

• Pre-operation inspection and reading the forklift data plate
• Stability triangle, center of gravity, and combined center of gravity
• Load center, rated capacity, and safe load handling
• Traveling, turning, ramps, grades, and pedestrian awareness
• Refueling, battery charging, parking, and shutdown

Each program is available as streaming access (1-month or 1-year), MP4 download, or USB/DVD — in English and Spanish. Programs include the trainer and employee materials needed to run and document a training session. Employee booklets (packs of 10) and workplace posters are available to reinforce the classroom session.
