Our Excavation & Trenching Safety training course helps workers understand the hazards of excavation and trenching operations and how to protect themselves in compliance with OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1926. All excavations are inherently hazardous because of their unstable nature — workers can be seriously injured or killed if the sides of a trench collapse, and even shallow trenches pose significant risks. Trenching and excavation fatalities are among the most preventable in construction — yet cave-ins, hazardous atmospheres, flooding, and struck-by hazards continue to injure and kill workers each year. This 15-minute program covers OSHA's excavation standard, the critical role of the competent person, soil classification, protective systems, and worksite safety procedures. Available in English and Spanish.

Course Outcomes:

Who Should Take This Course?
Any worker who works on or around trenching and excavation projects in construction, utilities, or public works — including laborers, equipment operators, and supervisors. Also suitable for safety managers responsible for excavation programs, train-the-trainer use, and annual refresher training.

Commonly paired with this course for a complete construction safety program:

  • Confined Space Entry for Construction Training — excavations that meet confined space criteria require additional entry procedures and permits; this course covers OSHA 1926 Subpart AA requirements that directly apply to workers entering deep or enclosed excavations.
  • Fall Protection Training — covers OSHA fall protection requirements for construction workers, including those working near open excavations and trench edges where fall hazards are present.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this training satisfy OSHA requirements?

Yes. This course covers the training requirements of OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P — Excavations. Please note that OSHA also requires a competent person to inspect excavations daily and after any event that could affect conditions, classify soil, and oversee protective systems. This training provides the foundational knowledge for workers and supervisors, but the competent person designation must be established separately by the employer based on demonstrated knowledge and authority.

What is a "competent person" for excavation work?

OSHA defines a competent person as someone who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions that are hazardous or dangerous to employees, and who has the authority to take prompt corrective measures. For excavation work, the competent person must be able to classify soil types, select appropriate protective systems, and inspect excavations before each work shift. This course covers competent person roles and duties as part of its content.

Does a trench have to be deep to be dangerous?

No. OSHA requires protective systems for all trenches five feet or deeper, but even trenches less than five feet deep can be hazardous in unstable or previously disturbed soil, and competent person judgment may still require protective measures. A cubic yard of soil can weigh over 3,000 pounds — enough to fatally injure a worker even in a relatively shallow trench. This course emphasizes that depth alone does not determine danger.

Does this subscription automatically renew?

Yes. This is a prepaid subscription that automatically renews at the end of each term at the then-current price unless canceled. You can view, manage, or cancel your subscription at any time through your account portal.

What's the difference between Streaming, MP4, USB, and DVD?

Streaming gives you instant online access from any device — no download required. MP4 is a one-time download you host on your own platform such as an LMS, file server, or SharePoint. USB and DVD are physical media shipped to you, best for classroom training where internet access is limited or unavailable.

If I purchase the USB, can I copy the video to share with others?

No. The video on the USB is encrypted and licensed to only be played from the USB. It must be inserted in your computer for it to play.

What documentation is provided for compliance recordkeeping?

The kit includes a compliance manual, employee quiz and answer key, completion certificates, wallet/ID cards, an attendance log, a training outline, and excavation and trenching supplemental printouts — everything needed to document that training was completed and maintain OSHA compliance records.

How do I access the Documentation on the DVD?

You will need to access the DVD with a computer so you can browse to the Documentation folder.
