Our Respirable Crystalline Silica Safety training course helps employees understand the hazards of crystalline silica exposure and how to protect themselves in compliance with OSHA Standards 29 CFR 1910.1000, 1910.1053, and 1910.134. Workplace illness takes the lives of thousands of workers each year, and respirable crystalline silica is one of the most dangerous hazardous minerals workers are exposed to. Approximately 2.3 million workers are exposed to crystalline silica, and OSHA estimates that about 40% of these workers are exposed to silica levels exceeding current permissible exposure limits. OSHA finalized two silica standards — one for general industry and one for construction — to protect workers from the serious risks of silica exposure, including silicosis, lung cancer, and other respiratory diseases. OSHA estimates these standards will save over 600 lives annually and prevent more than 900 cases of silicosis each year. This 14-minute program covers exposure control plans, assessment methods, regulated areas, respiratory protection, housekeeping, and medical surveillance requirements. Available in English and Spanish.

Commonly paired with this course for a complete respiratory and hazardous exposure safety program:

  • Personal Protective Equipment Training — covers PPE selection, use, and maintenance including respiratory protection, essential for workers exposed to crystalline silica dust.
  • Hazard Communication Training — covers chemical labels and Safety Data Sheets under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200, applicable to silica-containing materials and other hazardous substances encountered alongside silica exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this training satisfy OSHA requirements?

Yes. This course covers the training requirements of OSHA Standards 29 CFR 1910.1000, 1910.1053 (general industry silica standard), and 1910.134 (respiratory protection). Please note that OSHA also requires a written exposure control plan and, where applicable, periodic exposure monitoring and medical surveillance, which must be implemented by your organization beyond this training.

What jobs commonly involve exposure to crystalline silica?

Crystalline silica exposure commonly occurs in jobs involving cutting, grinding, drilling, or crushing materials such as concrete, stone, brick, and sand. Industries with significant exposure risk include construction, foundries, manufacturing, hydraulic fracturing (sand used in fracking operations), and maritime work involving abrasive blasting. This course is tailored to workers across these higher-risk roles.

When is respiratory protection required for silica exposure?

Respiratory protection is required when engineering and work practice controls are not sufficient to reduce exposure below the permissible exposure limit (PEL), or during certain tasks specified under OSHA's Table 1 control methods. This course covers how to determine when respiratory protection is necessary and how to select the appropriate type.

Does this subscription automatically renew?

Yes. This is a prepaid subscription that automatically renews at the end of each term at the then-current price unless canceled. You can view, manage, or cancel your subscription at any time through your account portal.

What's the difference between Streaming, MP4, USB, and DVD?

Streaming gives you instant online access from any device — no download required. MP4 is a one-time download you host on your own platform such as an LMS, file server, or SharePoint. USB and DVD are physical media shipped to you, best for classroom training where internet access is limited or unavailable.

If I purchase the USB, can I copy the video to share with others?

No. The video on the USB is encrypted and licensed to only be played from the USB. It must be inserted in your computer for it to play.

What documentation is provided for compliance recordkeeping?

The kit includes a compliance manual, employee quiz and answer key, completion certificates, wallet/ID cards, an attendance log, a training outline, and respirable crystalline silica supplemental documents — everything needed to document that training was completed and maintain OSHA compliance records.

How do I access the Documentation on the DVD?

You will need to access the DVD with a computer so you can browse to the Documentation folder.
