What Is National Safety Month?

National Safety Month is a nationally recognized observance held every June, dedicated to raising awareness about the leading causes of preventable injuries and deaths in the workplace — and beyond. From slips, trips, and falls to ergonomic hazards, emergency preparedness, and mental health in the workplace, this month shines a bright spotlight on the practices and behaviors that keep people safe.

Led by the National Safety Council (NSC), National Safety Month is more than a calendar event — it's a movement. It's a chance for organizations, businesses, schools, and communities to come together and say loudly and proudly: We value our people. We protect our workers. Safety MATTERS here.

Each week of June focuses on a different safety theme, giving teams something actionable to rally around all month long. Think toolbox talks, safety drills, awareness campaigns, team challenges, and more.

The History of National Safety Month

To understand why National Safety Month is so important, we have to go back to the roots of the safety movement itself.

The Birth of the National Safety Council (1913)

At the turn of the 20th century, workplace injuries and fatalities were shockingly common. Industrial workers faced dangerous conditions daily with little to no protection. That began to change in 1913 when the National Safety Council was founded — a nonprofit organization with a singular mission: to eliminate preventable deaths in America.

From its earliest days, the NSC brought together industry leaders, government officials, and safety advocates to share best practices, develop safety standards, and push for meaningful change. Because every life counts — and that belief has been at the heart of the safety movement from the very beginning.

Safety Awareness Goes National

Over the following decades, the NSC became a powerhouse of workplace safety advocacy. As workplace regulations evolved — particularly with the landmark establishment of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in 1970 — safety awareness began to take deeper root across American workplaces.

But the NSC knew that regulation alone wasn't enough. Culture had to change. People had to care. Education had to reach every corner of every industry.

National Safety Month Is Born

That's why the NSC officially established National Safety Month as a dedicated, month-long observance — creating a concentrated window of time each year to focus attention, energize teams, and reinforce the behaviors that prevent injuries and save lives.

Since its inception, National Safety Month has grown into one of the most widely recognized workplace safety initiatives in the United States. Today, thousands of organizations across the country participate each year, from Fortune 500 companies to small businesses, government agencies to nonprofits. The reach is enormous — and growing!

Why National Safety Month Still Matters

You might be thinking: We already have safety training. We already follow OSHA guidelines. Do we really need a whole month?

YES. Absolutely yes. Here's why:

  • According to the NSC, a preventable injury occurs in the workplace every 7 seconds in America.
  • Workplace injuries cost U.S. employers over $170 billion per year in direct and indirect costs.
  • More importantly, behind every statistic is a real person — someone's parent, partner, sibling, or friend.

National Safety Month is the annual reminder that the work is never truly "done." Safety culture requires constant reinforcement, fresh conversations, and renewed commitment. This month gives us the perfect opportunity to reset, refocus, and recommit — for the 15: for every worker who clocks in each day counting on their team to bring them home safely.

How YOU Can Participate This June

4. Share Safety Tips on Social Media

5. Audit Your Workplace
Walk the floor. Check for hazards. Review your emergency procedures. Use this month as a motivator to make meaningful improvements.

6. Invest in Training
From first aid certifications to ergonomics workshops, use June as a launchpad to upskill your team and equip them with the knowledge they need to stay safe.

A Culture of Safety Is a Culture of Care

At its core, National Safety Month isn't about checklists or compliance — it's about caring for one another. When you invest in safety, you're telling your team: "Your life has value. We see you. We want you to go home to the people you love."

That message is powerful. That message is contagious. And that message can transform the way your entire organization thinks, works, and operates.

So this June, let's make it count! Let's talk safety at every meeting, celebrate every near-miss reported, and recognize every worker who speaks up about a hazard. Let's build workplaces where safety isn't an afterthought — it's the foundation of everything we do.

Because every worker deserves to go home safe. Every single day.
