Requirements for scaffolding in the workplace is vital to maintaining the safety of employees. This informational poster lists all of the requirements for employees using any scaffolding materials while on the job.
“Scaffolding Safety Requirements
Platform
Platform must be able to support its own weight plus four times the maximum intended load. Platforms and walkways must be at least 18” wide. If not 18” wide, fall protection must be provided and used.
Support structure
Components must be capable of supporting, without failure, their own weight and at least four times their maximum intended load. Never modify components to make them fit together.
Base section
Scaffolding must be built on a stable base foundation and must be square and level. Poles, frames and uprights must be plumb and braced to prevent swaying and displacement.
Fall protection
Fall protection consists of personal fall-arrest systems or guardrail systems and must be used when scaffold is 10 feet or more above a lower level.
Access
Safe access must be provided. There are many different forms of access that can be utilized: *ladders such as portable, hook-on, attachable, and stairways *stair towers, ramps and walkways.
Stability
Scaffolding becomes inherently unstable once its height is four times its minimum base dimension. Weather and damage to structure components can also affect the stability of a scaffold.”
