Forklifts are used in a variety of different settings. They can be used to move, raise, and lower large objects, pallets, crates, or other containers. As with any equipment or tool, there are many possible hazards associated with their use. Exceeding the capacity of the forklift presents serious hazards such as tip-overs, falling loads, loss of steering control, collision, and being struck by a falling load. A forklift’s capacity is the manufacturer’s guideline for how much weight the forklift can safely lift.
The stated capacity of a forklift only applies to the load center indicated on the data plate. If the load is not centered at the specified position, the forklift’s capacity will be reduced. Loads come in all shapes and sizes, not just symmetrical boxes. An example is standard pipe or unstacked lumber that is not tied together. The load size, position, and weight distribution critically affect the forklift’s capacity and the stability of the truck.

In recent years many workplace deaths attributed to violence have gained much public attention due to increased media coverage. It seems as though every other week another story is reported on a violent death occurring at a workplace because of a disgruntled or former employee, a domestic dispute playing out at work, or a heated dispute between workers.
Homicide has become a leading cause of fatal occupational injuries in the United States. While homicide is the most extreme form of workplace violence, it represents a very small number of workplace violence incidents. Most incidents that occur at the workplace deal with lesser cases of assault, threats, harassment and other violent acts and generally receive less media coverage. It is estimated that nearly two million American workers report being a victim of workplace violence each year with many more acts of violence going unreported.
For employers and workers both, this is a difficult topic that is about more than compliance. Our training course is designed to give all members of your work team an understanding of workplace violence risks and warnings, plus techniques to help prevent hostile situations.
