June is National Safety Month

June is National Safety Month. The National Safety Council sponsors this program in an effort to bring attention to safety hazards in the workplace and help companies focus on reducing injuries and deaths. This year’s topics for National Safety Month are Hazard Recognition, Slips, Trips and Falls, Fatigue and Impairment.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • Injuries are the leading cause of death among persons age 1-44.
  • Each year 214,000 people die from injury – one person every three minutes.
  • 2.8 million people were hospitalized due to injuries in 2015
  • 27.6 million people were treated in an emergency department for injuries in 2015.

What can you do as a business to help prevent injuries and possibly even death at your workplace? Here are a few ideas to get you started.

  • Engage employees by having them participate in creating safety procedures and policies for the workplace
  • Provide safety training
  • Hold daily five-minute safety talks that focus on specific safety topics
  • Encourage employees to follow safety procedures through positive reinforcements such as verbal praise, donut days, luncheons, lottery tickets, candy bars, etc.
